Head of Underwriting, E&S
Zurich North America is seeking a Head of Underwriting for our growing E&S Business Unit. This role will be responsible for Portfolio Strategy & Execution, Risk Selection and Pricing, Portfolio Stewardship and Product Management. This is a critical role which requires oversight of strategic underwriting practices nationally. This leader will utilize their expertise to manage, design and drive diverse multidimensional strategies for our E&S book of business. We require strong leadership skills that will cultivate portfolio insights, develop strategy, and deliver a collaborative value chain with our Brokers and Customers.
The Head of Underwriting E&S provides underwriting leadership across all lines of business to improve underwriting performance This leader will also direct the implementation and sustainment of The Zurich Way of Underwriting, lead underwriting operational transformation, and maintain a sound governance framework.
This position reports to the Head of E&S andcan be based in one of our Zurich offices with business travel expected.
Develop, expand, support and advocate underwriting guidelines and priorities for Zurich E&S within underwriting guidelines for Zurich.
Identify, prioritize, and escalate portfolio management, technical skills, and product innovation needs.
Lead the development of the Strategic Business Directives for the BU, which requires collaboration across Line of Business Technical teams; effective prioritization of and engagement and participation in ongoing portfolio management activities; and implementation, monitoring and driving execution of UW actions identified through monthly engagement with product team leaders.
Works closely with product management to refine and tailor BU product offerings to the E&S market.
Ensures effective implementation and adoption of underwriting and pricing tools; portfolio strategy; and underwriting and pricing guidelines
Leads and drives Tiering strategy (identifying appropriate signals for all lines of business) and has a granular view of tiering results.
Establishes proper frameworks to drive effective outcomes for key underwriting activities, including underwriter training, productivity, empowerment, and quality.
Bachelor’s Degree and 12 or more years of experience in the Property & Casualty Commercial Insurance Industry
Prior management experience leading a high performing team
5+ years of experience in managing underwriting operations within the Excess and Surplus Lines Market for an insurance company
Advanced and in-depth knowledge of E&S across Property, Casualty and Financial Lines of business
Portfolio management, risk selection and pricing experience
Product development and underwriting strategy experience
Strong collaboration, conflict resolution and influencing skills
Technical knowledge and multi-level leadership skills
Experience building and managing cross functional teams
Strong executive presence and the ability to interact across all levels of the organization
Ability to manage vision and purpose, lead the organization through innovative and creative thinking
Track record of fostering business improvement and delivering change in a complex insurance environment
