Description

Job Summary

Manages allcoverage and extra-contractual litigation requiring the highest degree of legal complexity and coordination requiring specialized expertise to protect the interests of the company. Responsible for managing all aspects of the litigation process in representation of the company. Provides legal counsel and insights in partnership with, underwriting and claims organizations on policy language, new product offerings and complex coverage interpretations to ensure continuous improvements to products, processes and operations.

Job Accountabilities

  • Work towards timely resolution of unique coverage issues and potential litigation by developing, preparing and implementing coverage and/or extra-contractual litigation strategies for the highest complexity and exposure assignments requiring specialized expertise in line of business.

  • Manage and oversee all aspects of litigation matters by assigning cases to outside counsel, partnering to establish litigation strategies and budget; coordinating activities; overseeing progress; reviewing litigation expenses, authorizing payments and evaluating outside counsel performance

  • Resolves technical coverage issues and provides legal counsel to claims professionals and underwriters on coverage issues, product development, product refresh, policy language and specials endorsements to address coverage matters.

  • Ensure legal compliance by following regional, country and/or local laws and regulations and internal control requirements.

  • Provide proactive insights and legal guidance by identifying opportunities for technical excellence, developing and delivering targeted training to the organization.

  • Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing related results and participating on projects as needed.

Job Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor and 8 or more years of experience as a practicing lawyer in private practice, insurance, and / or a combination of both, with an emphasis on coverage and extra-contractual litigation and coverage interpretation

AND

  • Member in good standing of a Provincial Bar

  • Member in good standing of a Provincial Bar
