Special Collections Litigation Specialist


Zurich is currently looking for a Special Collections Litigation Specialist to work out of our North American headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois.

The Special Collections Litigation Specialist will perform collection and receivables management duties on accounts with the highest complexity that are referred to our Special Collections unit, including responsibilities for directing / monitoring bankruptcy, litigation and arbitration matters referred to retained legal counsel.

Responsibilities will include review of legal documents, participation in depositions, hearings and trials as our company representation and/or witness, negotiation of settlements and preparation of promissory notes. Other tasks will include the creation of payment and ultimate financial analysis, bad debt reserving and reporting, along with collection of receivables prior to retention of legal counsel.

This individual will ensure financial goals are being met and all actions are in compliance with our policies, procedures and our Code of Conduct.

Additional responsibilities will include:

  • Under limited supervision perform as an initial point of escalation providing technical guidance and work direction.

  • Analyze account information and provide explanationsto internal and external clients inquiries by providing technical advice in a professional, timely and accurate manner in complex situations

  • Reviewing legal documents, participation in depositions, hearings and trials as Zurich’s representation and/or witness, negotiation of settlements and preparation of promissory notes

  • Handles filing of proof of claim on complex loss sensitive programs

  • Monitors the instruments of security to maximize collections.

  • Establishes bad debt reserves.

  • Collecting, reconciling, invoicing and minimizing outstanding balances anddelinquencies to assigned accounts

  • Handling the most complex and higher volume accounts (more policies/program, retro and deductible programs, loss fund components).

  • Will set bad debt reserves, work with attorneys to negotiate settlement, and may serve as a witness at arbitrations. (Covered in Summary above)

  • Participate in depositions, arbitrations, and litigation proceedings as necessary. (Covered in Summary above)

  • Identify and resolve problems, verify accuracy of processed transactions, reconcile and perform duties per defined procedures.

  • Prepare draft handbooks (or equivalent local frameworks) based on accepted changes to policies and procedures, to ensure they are up-to-date and reflect new policies, and ensure compliance with regulatory or statutory requirements in product or process area by cross-checking data and documentation and delivering specialist advice to the business.

  • Research primary financial data sources, select relevant information, analyze key themes and trends, execute and measure effective controls and make recommendations to inform policy and/or process development.

  • Research best practice and review and analyze detailed business models to support senior management in developing and improving processes and systems by leading the testing of new solutions relevant to area of finance operations expertise or discipline.

  • Provide guidance and support and deliver training to educate team members and increase awareness of existing or new policies and procedures to optimize performance and increase compliance within process or product area.

  • Analyzing performance of key performance indicators and communicate status and issues to management

  • Leading and collaborating on moderately complex ad hoc projects

  • Provide administrative support to local team and participate in projects, as assigned.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the customer’s needs, reviews process and procedures; recommend and implement continuous improvement.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5 or more years of experience in the Finance Operations areaOR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7 or more years of experience in the Finance Operations area
