Head of Underwriting Landscape Transformation


Zurich North America is seeking a Head of Underwriting Landscape Transformation. Zurich is currently building the next generation underwriting ecosystem that combines enhanced products, streamlined processes, simplified pricing and distinctive insights all powered by best in class technology platforms. The goal is to enable the Zurich underwriters to focus their efforts in making critical underwriting decisions and engaging with the brokers and customers to deliver the best of Zurich. This is a very significant enterprise wide initiative and the Head of Underwriting Landscape Transformation will play a critical leadership role in driving this effort.

A key part of this effort is the implementation of Guidewire underwriting systems across multiple lines of business and multiple underwriting groups. This is a large scale transformation that involves working closely with a large cross-functional team drawn from groups throughout Zurich North America and close collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders – from front-line managers through to senior executives. Given the scale of investment, the Head of Underwriting Landscape Transformation will play a critical role in defining the roadmap and addressing current business challenges through this transformation to maximize the benefits delivered to the Zurich businesses.

The ideal candidate would bring a proven track record of leading and delivering large scale transformations, deep commercial property casualty insurance underwriting and product experience, and collaborative leadership style combined with strong people management and development skills. Schaumburg, Illinois where most of the team is based is the preferred location for this role but we are open to discussion for the ideal candidate.

Responsibilities include:

  • Driving the transformation of the underwriting landscape to deliver underwriting experience of the best underwriting company

  • Represents Technical Underwriting in underwriting landscape transformation efforts and delivers the underwriting perspective (e.g., ZNA portfolio management, product, guidelines, pricing)

  • Provides broader leadership in underwriting landscape transformation including engaging with senior stakeholders, communicating the transformation program to the broader company, identifying and pulling in subject matter experts as needed

  • Interfaces at the global level to understand and determine adoption of new tools and systems

  • Sits at the table on any discussion and prioritization for underwriting landscape

  • Leads and drives the Guidewire program implementation (Policy Center and Underwriting Manager)

  • Develop, manage and syndicate the roadmap of the Guidewire program by balancing the needs of the BUs, Technical Underwriting, Operations and other groups

  • Drive and manage stakeholders’ expectations and engagement (BUs, Technical Underwriting, Operations, IT)

  • In collaboration with Technical Underwriting teams, drive rationalization and simplification of products that are scheduled to move onto the Guidewire platform (includes coverages, forms, rating, pricing)

  • Own the delivery of a consistent experience across products on the Guidewire platform – “common as possible, deviate only if necessary”

  • Drive fact-base benefits analysis to support decision making and prioritization

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 10 or more years of experience in property casualty insurance industry


  • Experience in leading large scale transformation programs

  • People management and leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Product knowledge – deep knowledge of commercial insurance products is strongly preferred

  • Track record of successfully delivering large scale transformation programs

  • Strong collaboration, conflict resolution and influencing skills

  • Excellent managerial, team building and organizational skills

  • Understanding of Zurich North America products and pricing – technical experience preferred

  • Proven record of collaboration – particularly with IT and market facing businesses

  • Critical strategic thinking skills

  • Strong project planning skills
