Middle Markets Underwriter
Zurich is currently hiring for a Middle Markets Underwriter for our Middle Markets team in Seattle, WA or Portland, OR! While this position will be based out of our Seattle, WA or Portland, OR offices, you will have the flexibility to work both in the office and remotely. You will partner with your manager to set a flexible work schedule that supports you, our customers, and our brokers and agents. This role will require you to be visible in the marketplace to meet with our agents and brokers and be in the office one day a week for a team collaboration day.

Our industry focus includes (not limited to) General Industries, Manufacturing, Technology, and Real Estate. Zurich Middle Markets offers end to end solutions for our customers inclusive of international programs. As a Middle Markets Underwriter you will handle complex new and renewal Middle Markets business and serve as a Subject Matter Expert on the team. As a member of Zurich's Underwriting Team, you will enjoy the opportunity to fully apply and hone your underwriting and marketing skills while building relationships with our Preferred Distribution Partners in the Pacific Northwest area. This role will be filled at either the Underwriter I or II level. The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based upon the selected applicant’s experience and skill set relative to the qualifications listed for this position.
The Middle Markets Underwriter is responsible for:
Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
Develop and maintain relationships with distributors (agents & brokers) in support of business retention and acquisition and works with customers and distributors (agents & brokers) to determine their insurance related needs and provide solutions.
Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities.
Complete detailed opportunity assessment with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.
Make broker/customer and on-sight calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose.
Cross-Sell other lines of business to increase the organization's product density with the account.
Proactively engage in the target account process, managing a qualified list of opportunities 90 to 120 days prior to effective date.
Calculate Target Price accurately by utilizing underwriting tools appropriately.
Measure exposures/analyze risk. Quote and set coverage, negotiate terms and conditions.
Participate in marketing presentations to assigned agents/brokers.
Resolve technical problems by referring to policies, procedures, specifications.
Middle Markets Underwriter (Level I) Basic Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 1 or more years of experience in the Insurance or Market Facing area, Cybersecurity, Finance, Management Consulting. OR
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support areaAND
Knowledge of the insurance industry and the legal and regulatory environment
Knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations and guidelines
Middle Markets Underwriter (Level II) Basic Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Brokerage or Market Facing areaOR
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support areaOR
Zurich approved Apprenticeship program including an Associate Degree and 1 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing areaOR
Zurich approved Apprenticeship program including an Associate Degree and 4 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support areaAND
Knowledge of line/s of business and the legal and regulatory guidelines
Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business
Experience with Microsoft Office
Interest and knowledge of Commercial Property Underwriting
Established broker relationships
Sales execution mindset
Creative problem-solving skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills
