Zurich is currently hiring for our Middle Markets team in New York! We have an immediate need for a Senior Underwriter with property and casualty expertise to join the East Region Middle Markets team.We are looking for a Senior Underwriter with proven ability to develop successful solution-oriented coverage and service proposals in the middle market space and have experience coaching underwriters to do the same. Strong analytical and marketing-communication skills are essential to the job. The ideal candidate has experience underwriting technology, manufacturing, healthcare and/or real estate risks, has a package underwriting background, as well as established agency relationships in the NY Tri-state region.

The Senior Middle Markets Underwriter is responsible for:

  • Serving as a customer industry advocate with a focus on improving the customer experience by understanding their risk and offering the best end to end solution for their insurance needs.

  • Using risk insights, data and models to drive informed decisions at point of sale

  • Identifying gaps involves and aligning Zurich’s products and value proposition to offer a solution that provides the contract certainty the customer needs

  • Managing a portfolio of renewal business with our select brokers, achieving rate and retention goals across a diverse book of business.

  • Using portfolio tools and available resources to negotiate (early) renewals consistent with team goals.

  • Understanding how to build a pipeline of new business in our target customer segments, solicit the opportunities, quote quality deals and win the business.

  • Skillfully starting and managing select broker and customer relationships, and balancing stakeholder needs to achieve mutually significant objectives.

  • Leading and coaching less experienced underwriters and willingness to accept feedback and develop important leadership skills.

  • Be a self-starter capable of working under limited supervision

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in commercial underwriting or brokerage or market facing areaOR

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the claims or underwriting support areaOR

  • Zurich approved Apprenticeship program including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing areaOR

  • Zurich approved Apprenticeship program including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business

  • Experience working in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Property & Casualty underwriting experience and broker relationships in the NY Tri-State Region

  • Ability to effectively assess risk

  • Strong negotiation skills

  • Strong retail broker relationships

  • Superior skills in relationship building, active listening, needs analysis, and win-win negotiatingPossess knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations and guidelines

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of positions of increasing responsibility

  • PC and related software skills

  • CPCU and ARM a plus
