Zurich North America is looking for an experienced Commercial Surety Underwriter to join our East Region Commercial Surety team. Ideally this role will be based out of our office in New York City and we will also consider remote talent in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts or Connecticut.

The Commercial Surety Underwriter is a uniquely technical role in the underwriting world. In this position you will be responsible for the overall account management, business development and analysis of a highly complex book of Commercial Surety Accounts. This is a great opportunity for an experienced Commercial Surety Underwriter to use their analytical skills, their entrepreneurial spirit, along with their ability to develop and maintain relationships with our Brokers and Customers to write profitable business. Our ideal candidate will have a can-do positive attitude, strong analytical, communication and presentation skills, excellent time management skills, and the ability to further develop and sharpen established negotiation skills.

This role will be filled at either the Account Executive Level or the AVP, Commercial Surety Underwriter Level. The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based upon the selected applicant’s experience and skill set relative to the qualifications listed for this position.

Additional responsibilities will include:

  • Proactively seeking and negotiating profitable renewal and new account opportunities and qualifying them to ensure they align with Zurich’s appetite.

  • Partnering with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.

  • Cross-Selling other lines of business to increase product density with the account

  • Participating in Sales Team meetings with assigned brokers and / or territory

  • Proactively engage in the target account process, managing a qualified list of opportunities 90 to 120 days prior to effective date.

  • Serving as a key contact for assigned target accounts.

  • Developing strong broker and client networks

  • Contributing to development of u/w manuals, programs and guidelines.

  • Investigating, recommending and implementing leading edge technical solutions to meet customer needs

Basic Qualifications:

Commercial Surety Account Executive:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting, Market Facing area, Finance, Accounting, or Banking.OR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support areaOR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 1 or more years of experience in the Underwriting, Market Facing area, Finance, Accounting, or Banking.OR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 4 or more years of experience in the Claims orUnderwriting Support areaAND

  • Knowledge of line/s of business and the legal and regulatory guidelines

  • Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business

  • Experience with Microsoft Office

OR

Commercial Surety Account AVP:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting, Market Facing area or Finance, Accounting, Banking.OR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support areaOR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting, Market Facing area or Finance, Accounting, Banking.OR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support areaAND

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business

  • Experience working in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree

  • Commercial Surety Underwriting experience

  • Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations and guidelines

  • Ability to effectively analyze and assess risk

  • Strong presentation skills

Compensation for roles at Zurich varies depending on a wide array of factors including but not limited to the specific office location, role, skill set, and level of experience.The salary provided is a nationwide market range and has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location where the position may be filled.As required by local law, Zurich provides in good faith a reasonable range of compensation for roles. Compensation may exceed the salary listed based on the evaluation of skillset and experience. The combined salary range for this position is $89,600.00 - $178,600.00.
