VP, Technical Underwriter V, Liability


Zurich North America is looking for a VP, Technical Underwriter, Liability for our Liability Line of Business Technical Underwriting Team. The VP, Technical Underwriter, Liability provides technical underwriting expertise and guidance on liability matters to the Strategic Business Unit (SBU) Leaders and Underwriters and acts independently as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on the Liability Line of Business (LOB) in support of the achievement of business plans and directives.

The VP, Technical Underwriter, Liability reports to the Head of Liability Line of Business for Zurich North America. Ideally this role will be based out of Zurich’s North American Headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois but there is flexibility in the location of this role.

The VP, Technical Underwriter, Liability responsibilities include:

  • Line of Business leadership including the ability to continuously evaluate the health of the Liability Line of Business, to deliver persuasive guidance and insights to the business units and to monitor internal and external signals to help steer the direction of the liability portfolio

  • Leading complex Liability Line of Business projects from initiation to completion involving many diverse stakeholders

  • Leading the development of Liability Line of Business underwriting guidance on emerging risks

  • Providing input into the Strategic Business Unit strategy with respect to Liability

  • Handling the most complex Liability referrals and consultations

  • Delivering advanced training on Liability specific matters

  • Supporting continuous improvement of underwriting processes across the organization

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 10 or more years of experience in the Underwriting area

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven expert level experience with the General Liability Line on the Primary basis with front line P&L responsibilities

  • High comfort level with all portfolio management and insurance KPIs including an in-depth understanding of general liability rating and pricing models

  • Demonstrated ability to drive complex projects to successful outcomes with excellent execution, communication and influencing skills

  • Line of Business, portfolio management , risk selection and pricing experience

  • Product development experience preferred

  • Strong executive presence and the ability to interact at all levels of the organization

  • Solution oriented mindset, strong collaboration and conflict resolution skills

  • Strong experience with GL Pollution matters and Environmental Liability experience preferred

  • Advanced Word, Excel , PowerPoint knowledge & experience

  • Proven track record of transformational success
