AVP, Underwriter Officer-Surety


Zurich North America is looking for an AVP, Underwriter Officer to join our Commercial Surety team. Ideally this role will be based out of our Seattle office, but we are open to any Zurich location in the West Region including San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Denver. The Commercial AVP, Underwriter Officer will be part of the West Region Commercial Team currently made-up of 6 Market Facing Underwriters responsible for 300+ diverse and complex accounts spread across 13 states.

The Commercial AVP, Underwriter Officer is a uniquely technical role in the underwriting world. We are looking for someone with a strong Finance background including credit analysis if not already experienced in the Surety marketplace. Our ideal candidate will have a can-do positive attitude, strong analytical, communication and presentation skills, excellent time management skills, and the ability to further develop and sharpen established negotiation skills.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting, Finance, Accounting, Banking experience in the Market Facing areaOR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support areaOR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of Underwriting, Finance, Accounting, Banking experience in the Market Facing areaOR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support areaAND

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business

  • Experience working in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Surety knowledge/experience and knowledge of the legal and regulatory guidelines

  • Understanding of structure of broker relationships

  • Ability to analyze and understand complicated credit assessments, trends, and strategies

  • Investigative skills (curiosity) to develop an understanding of business strategies, trends, complex contracts, assessment of long term obligations and organizational character among other aspects of our customers

  • Ability to coherently articulate these strategies and financial concepts formulating fact based conclusions and recommendations

  • Prior experience managing/growing profitable portfolio of customers

  • Negotiation experience with brokers and large, international and national organizations

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

The salary range for this role is $98,400-$123,000. This is the range Zurich NA in good faith believes is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of the posting. Zurich NA may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in Colorado. This range may be modified in the future. This job is also bonus eligible. No amount is considered to be wages or compensation until such amount is earned, vested, and determinable.
