Zurich is currently looking for an experienced Underwriter II for the Chicago PACE team within our Commercial Insurance Division.

As a member of Zurich's Pace Underwriting Team you will enjoy the opportunity to fully apply and hone your underwriting and marketing skills. Specifically, you will underwrite and analyze new and renewal business for our Auto, Property, Worker’s Compensation, Umbrella and General Liability lines of business. In this exciting and challenging position, you will be interacting and facing the market, under limited supervision, utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority levels on assignments of moderate technical complexity ensuring a high level service to customers. In this position, you will develop and cultivate broker relationships across Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota and be expected to travel within this territory.

Our Pace Underwriter II is responsible for:

  • Administering and monitoring underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.

  • Developing relationships and collaborating with Line of Business representatives and other business groups within Zurich.

  • Developing and maintaining relationships with distributors (agents & brokers) in support of business retention and proactively sell renewal and account opportunities by determining their insurance needs and provide winning solutions.

  • Supporting the organization's sales culture by being a Help Point for agents, brokers and customers.

  • Completing detailed opportunity assessments with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.

  • Qualifying accounts to meet with the organization's appetite, balanced with sound business opportunity.

  • Making broker/customer visits and calls and participating in marketing presentations

  • Cross-Selling other lines of business to increase the organization's product density with the account.

  • Proactively engaging in the target account process, managing a qualified list of opportunities 90 to 120 days prior to effective date.

  • Updating required systems with details of broker / client visits and account statuses within specified time frame.

  • Serving as key contact for assigned target accounts.

  • Calculating Target Price accurately by utilizing underwriting tools appropriately and measuring exposures/analyzing risk.

  • Quoting and setting coverage, negotiate terms and conditions.

  • Servicing accounts, handle declinations/cancellations.

  • Identifying and complying with the main principles relevant to legal and regulatory controls that govern standard work practices.

  • Collecting evidence from well-established sources and delivering accurate decisions to customers and facilitate decision making on wider customer issues.

  • Monitoring underwriting processes in order to identify opportunities for improvement and resolving technical problems by referring to policies, procedures, specifications

  • Business Travel, as required (20-25% Travel)

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing areaOR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support areaOR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 1 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing areaOR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 4 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support areaAND

  • Knowledge of line/s of business and the legal and regulatory guidelines

  • Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business

  • Experience with Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 3 or more years’ experience in the underwriting area

  • Knowledge of Auto, Property, Worker’s Compensation, Umbrella and General Liability lines of Business

  • Strong negotiation skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Microsoft Office skills
