Zurich is seeking a Vice President or Assistant Vice President Market Facing Underwriter for our Corporate D&O team in our NY office.

This role will be filled at either the VP or AVP Level. The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based upon the selected applicant’s experience and skill set relative to the qualifications listed for this position.

As an Underwriter you will have a chance to use your marketing and analytical skills. Specifically, you will analyze and underwrite new and renewal business, under general direction, utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority levels on assignments of higher technical complexity ensuring a high-level service to customers. This is a market facing position thus we are seeking someone with a strong sales execution mindset and advanced knowledge of large property policies.

Some of the key accountabilities of this role include:

  • Underwrite and analyze new and renewal business utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting framework and within delegated authority levels on assignment of higher technical complexity and coordination.

  • Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations, and rating annual rules.

  • Develop, maintain & collaborate with Line of Business representatives on referrals and other business related needs, as appropriate.

  • May provide guidance to lower level associates.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with distributors (agents & brokers) in support of business retention and acquisition and works with customers and distributors (agents & brokers) to determine their insurance related needs and provide solutions.

  • Supports the sales culture by being a Help Point for agents, brokers and customers.

  • Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities.

  • Complete detailed opportunity assessment with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.

  • Qualify accounts to meet with the organization's appetite, balanced with sound business opportunity.

  • Make broker/customer and on-sight calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose.

Level IV Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area within the Commercial Insurance industryOR

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 14 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area within the Commercial Insurance industryOR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area within the Commercial Insurance industryOR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 12 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area within the Commercial Insurance industry

Level V Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Risk Management or Underwriting or Broker or Carrier or Market Facing area within the Commercial Insurance IndustryAND

  • Knowledge of Umbrella product lines and the insurance industry.

Preferred Qualifications Level IV & V:

  • A technical proficiency in profitability levers that apply to umbrella business including, but not limited to, rate, retention and book mix

  • An ability to understand pricing and price adequacy initiatives and the ability to lead the underwriters to execute on related underwriting actions

  • A broad knowledge of various umbrella forms and coverages and their relationship to the scale of risk

  • Knowledge of emerging, catastrophic casualty trends

  • Superior skills in relationship building, active listening, needs analysis, and win-win negotiating for both internal and external situations

  • Ability to plan ahead in changing market conditions

  • Ability to work with other departments in a team-playing environment

  • PC and related software skills including knowledge of Microsoft
